The most important thing you can do before getting a tattoo is taking the time to find the right studio and the right artist.
Basically, what you're looking for in a good tattoo is good solid colors, crisp clean lines, and a good sense of design. You want to make sure that the artist knows their craft.
The tattooists personality should not be a deciding factor. All you really need to communicate to your artist is what you're looking for in a tattoo so he or she can effectively render your ideas.
Remember you're supposed to be choosing a professional you will be able to do a competent job, not a friend to hang out with. Just because you enjoy somebody's company doesn't mean you should let them tattoo you. And don't try to be an art director. Once you've chosen the design and approved the positioning of it, just relax, sit still and let your artist do the job.
And the onlyvalid reason to get a tattoo is because you want one!
Ever hear the saying
"You get what you pay for" ?
Well, the body art industry is one place you won't find a better example of the prudence of that advice. Quality in the body art world can range anywhere from absolutely horrible to jaw-dropping fantastic. And everywhere in between.
And although it may not always be, in most cases you're going to get exactly what you pay for.
The first decision that you must make, after the big one of actually deciding to get a tattoo, is that you will not settle for anything less than wonderful work. Banal, boring imagery, uninspired colors, and badly drawn imagery has no place in modern tattooing. You are responsible for choosing a professional who is capable of rendering a beautiful work of art on your skin.
You are also responsible for choosing a design that will bring you joy and make you proud for the rest of your life. You may have to travel to get work from the artist of your choice. You will certainly have to invest some money in the project, not enough to feed a small nation, but good tattoos do not come cheap (and cheap tattoos are not good). Getting a tattoo is a big decision so take the time to educate yourself before you get inked, not after.
